Mokpo: Hotel Del Luna & 1987 filming locations

Mokpo opened as a port in 1897, and buildings from that era still stand around Yudalsan in the old town, per Mokpo City. Two productions used them: the drama Hotel Del Luna and the film 1987: When the Day Comes. Seosan-dong is a residential hillside, so visit quietly and do not photograph residents. This page gathers 3 places from 3 titles, each labeled by how well it is sourced (how we label places).

Walking route

Start at Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 on the slope of Yudalsan, see Museum 2 (the former Oriental Development Company building) nearby, then head to Yeonhee's Supermarket and the poetry alley in Seosan-dong. 1. Yeonhee's Supermarket

연희네 슈퍼

Mokpo City says the shop was used for Yeon-hee's family store, including the scene of Lee Han-yeol and Yeon-hee talking on the bench out front and the final scene of Yeon-hee running to the protest.

GETTING THERE From Mokpo Station, search the route to Seosan-dong on Naver Map (English UI). ACCESS A tiny shop kept by Mokpo City as an exhibit with the film's props, with a tourism guide on site, per the city's listing; it is not a working store. Behind it is a 31-meter air-raid shelter dug late in the Pacific War with forced Korean labor, which the city has lit and signposted. The hillside around it is residential: keep your voice down, do not photograph residents, and stay out of doorways and yards.

About this page

1987: When the Day Comes (1987) is a 2017 film distributed by CJ Entertainment about the June 1987 democracy movement in South Korea. Kim Tae-ri plays Yeon-hee, a university freshman whose family runs a small shop, and Kang Dong-won plays the student Lee Han-yeol.

The shop is reported: all our sources trace back to Mokpo City.

Yeonhee’s Supermarket

The shop sits on the hillside of Seosan-dong. Mokpo City restored it with the film’s props, and says it was used for scenes including Han-yeol and Yeon-hee talking on the bench out front and Yeon-hee’s run to the protest at the end. Behind it is a wartime air-raid shelter that the city has opened with lighting and signs. Mokpo City’s film-theme travel page also features the Seosan-dong poetry alley nearby; it is a residential lane, so walk it quietly.
