About this page

Welcome to Dongmakgol (웰컴 투 동막골) is a 2005 film directed by Park Kwang-hyun and distributed by Showbox. It is set during the Korean War. Soldiers from both Koreas and the Allied forces end up together in a remote mountain village. Jung Jae-young plays the North Korean officer and Shin Ha-kyun the South Korean officer.

The village was never real. It is an open set that the production built on a hillside in Mitan-myeon, Pyeongchang. It is confirmed: Pyeongchang County, VisitKorea and the national and regional press all identify it as the film’s set.

The village set

Pyeongchang County describes an artificial village: a road cut into the hillside and trees planted for the film. It is free to visit. According to the county, you walk the last 150 m or so along a single lane closed to vehicles.

Gangwon regional press reported in 2026 that most Korean film sets have been torn down, while this one survives as a village. The same reports say the opening scenes of The King’s Warden (2026), set in a village called Norugol, were filmed around here; we label that link reported. Mitan-myeon is also promoting trips that combine the set with Baengnyong Cave and the Yukbaekmajigi highland nearby. Neither of those is a filming location.

For other Korean War and DMZ films, and what was real and what was a set, see our DMZ in Korean film hub.

Getting there

We found no official bus route to the set, and no official page that says a car is needed. Search “웰컴투동막골 세트장” on Kakao Map or Naver Map for the route on your travel day. The set is on a mountain road in the south of Pyeongchang County, so allow time for the drive.
