Architecture 101 is a film about a house that had to be built twice: once for the camera, and once again, after a typhoon, as a cafe. Its one visitable place is that house in Wimi-ri, on Jeju's southeast coast — the spot where Seung-min and Seo-yeon's unfinished first love was given walls, a roof, and a sea view. Everything else the film shows in Seoul has no verified exact address, so this guide keeps to the Jeju house and says plainly what was left out.

1. Cafe Seo-yeon's House

카페 서연의 집

Korea Tourism Organization says Architecture 101 was shot in Wimi-ri and Seo-yeon's house stands there: director Lee Yong-ju bought an empty house and remodeled it as a set that is not a set. The Korean Film Council reports the Jeju shooting site was renovated by the production company's foundation into Cafe Seo-yeon's House, which opened Mar 27, 2013.

GETTING THERE Fly to Jeju International Airport. Korea Tourism Organization's directions run by bus to Wimi Elementary School, then about 10 minutes on foot toward the coast — but its bus numbers date from 2019, so check today's route on Naver Map or Kakao Map before you go. ACCESS A working cafe on the Olle 5 course. Hours vary across listings and the cafe's own page is no longer reachable, so check the current listing before you go. This guide states no hours or prices.

PLACES WE COULDN'T VERIFY

NOT VERIFIED YET
  • Seoul Jeong-neung neighborhood scenes: production notes say the film shot on location in Jeong-neung, but no exact address or venue was verified, so no Seoul stop is listed.
  • Hannam-dong cafe (first scene): production notes say filming began at a cafe in Hannam-dong, but no venue was identified, so it is not listed.

About this page

Architecture 101 (건축학개론, released Mar 22, 2012) is Lee Yong-ju’s first-love film, and it became the defining Korean melodrama of its year. Architecture student Seung-min meets Seo-yeon in an introductory architecture class in the early 1990s; they live in the same Seoul neighborhood, circle each other without ever quite confessing, and part. Fifteen years later, Seo-yeon reappears at Seung-min’s architecture office and asks him to design a house on her family’s land on Jeju Island. Building it together forces both of them back into everything they never said. The film’s present-day cast is Uhm Tae-woong and Han Ga-in; the young leads are Lee Je-hoon and Suzy.

This guide has one stop because only the Jeju house is verified at exact-spot level by official sources. The film’s Seoul scenes — the Jeong-neung neighborhood where the young couple lived, and the Hannam-dong cafe where filming began — have no verified exact address or identified venue, so they are left out rather than guessed. What remains is the film’s anchor: the house itself, in a fishing village on Jeju’s southeast coast, now a cafe you can sit in.

The house

Seo-yeon’s house stands on the coastal road at Wimi-ri, a small port village in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo, where the Olle Course 5 trail passes. Korea Tourism Organization says the film was shot in Wimi-ri and the house stands there: director Lee Yong-ju bought an empty house and remodeled it into what the article calls a set that is not a set — a real building dressed for the camera, on a real coastal road, in front of a real sea. That is why the place works as a visit. You are not looking at a backlot facade; you are standing on the coast road where the film’s central promise — a house built for a first love — was given an address.

Be clear-eyed about what today’s building is. The house you visit is not the original set walls. Typhoon Bolaven severely damaged the film-built house in late August 2012, and it was taken down that September. The production company, Myung Films, had its cultural foundation rebuild the site as a cafe from September 2012 to March 2013, designed by Gu Seung-hoe, the film’s construction consultant, with interiors by the film’s art director Woo Seung-mie. Cafe Seo-yeon’s House opened on Mar 27, 2013, and has traded as a cafe ever since. So the visit is to a rebuilt house on the film’s exact spot: same coast road, same sea view, same footprint of the story, but walls raised after the storm, not during the shoot. The guide says so plainly because the distinction matters — and because the rebuilt house, made by the film’s own people, is still the closest a visitor can get to the film’s house.

What you get on a visit is a working cafe with the sea in front of it. Visitor accounts describe film posters and memorabilia inside and a terrace facing the water; the draw is less any single prop than the combination — the house, the coast road, and the Olle trail walkers passing the door. Wimi Port is a short walk away along the coast road, and the Olle 5 course runs past the house between Namwon Port and Soesokkak, so the stop fits naturally into a coastal walk rather than demanding a trip of its own.

How we checked

The house is confirmed because two independent official bodies name the same place at exact-spot level. Korea Tourism Organization’s VisitKorea article says the film was shot in Wimi-ri and Seo-yeon’s house stands there. The Korean Film Council’s March 2013 news says the Jeju shooting site of Architecture 101 was renovated into Cafe Seo-yeon’s House, which opened Mar 27, 2013. Two official sources, one place, one story — so the stop is confirmed, not merely reported. The street address, 86 Wimihaean-ro, is corroborated across multiple independent listings that all give the identical road address, though no official street-address page was located. Hours and prices are deliberately not stated: listings disagree with each other, and the cafe’s own page listed in directories no longer loads, so only a current listing is reliable. Nothing was added from fan wikis, and no scene, episode, or address was guessed. Our method explains how each label is earned.

Getting there

Jeju is reached by flight — there is no KTX leg for this trip. From Jeju International Airport, Korea Tourism Organization’s directions run by bus to Wimi Elementary School, then about ten minutes on foot toward the coast. Its bus numbers date from 2019, so check today’s route on Naver Map or Kakao Map before you go, and use the map links on the stop card for the last mile. For more Jeju filming places, see Our Blues in Jeju and When Life Gives You Tangerines in Jeju. This guide states no hours, prices, or admission figures: the cafe’s listings disagree, and only a current listing is reliable.

FAQ

Why does this guide have only one stop?
Because only the Jeju house passes the site's bar. Production notes say the film shot in Seoul's Jeong-neung neighborhood and began at a Hannam-dong cafe, but no exact address or venue was verified for either, so no Seoul stop is listed. A one-stop guide with a confirmed house is more honest than a longer one padded with places you cannot pin down.
Is today's cafe the exact house from the film?
Same spot, rebuilt house. Typhoon Bolaven severely damaged the film-built house in late August 2012; it was taken down that September, and the production company's foundation rebuilt it as a cafe from September 2012 to March 2013, designed by Gu Seung-hoe, the film's construction consultant, with interiors by art director Woo Seung-mie. Cafe Seo-yeon's House opened March 27, 2013. What you visit is the rebuilt house on the film's site, not the original set walls.
Can I walk to it on the Olle trail?
Yes. The house sits on the Olle Course 5 route, which Korea Tourism Organization describes as running from Namwon Port to Soesokkak, 14.7 km, passing the house on the coastal road near Wimi Port. Walkers reach it from Wimi Port along the coast road; the full course takes most of a day, so plan it as a stop, not a detour.
What should I check before going?
The cafe's hours. Listings disagree with each other, and the cafe's own page listed in directories no longer loads, so confirm the current hours from a recent listing before you travel. This guide states no hours or prices for that reason. Jeju is reached by flight; there is no KTX leg for this trip.
